Turning the large knob on the side of the microscope changed the mechanical tube length (distance between the eyepiece and field lens). This effectively changed magnification within a narrow range. It also defocused the sample, so one would also have to refocus using coarse and/or fine focus knobs.

Larger magnification changes were accomplished by switching objective lenses.
