In the late 19th Century, binocular microscopes came into existence due, mainly, to the invention of the Wenham prism. These early microscopes were essentially monocular instruments with a second tube attached to the side.

The nosepiece mount has this slot (A) for a Wenham binocular prism or for insertion of the upper Nicol polar (analyzer). Both optical devices are missing in from instrument.
