Optics of the New Universal Microscope: Eyelens: dia 10mm, f=13mm; Field lens: dia= 21mm, f=60mm. Arrow shows the separate holder for attachment of the Lieberkuhn reflector.
This version of Adams' New Universal microscope has seven objective lenses mounted in the rotating wheel. Adams experimented with several configurations of this basic design. His original as described in Micrographia Illustrata (1746) shows six objectives. A specimen owned by the RMS (#238) in London has eight lenses.
Disassembled body showing the central placement of the field lens.
Shown here is the microscope used as a simple magnifier for viewing opaque samples. Note that the Lieberkuhn reflector is screwed into a separate mounting frame. This allows the reflector to be moved independently from the focus mechanism.
Three Lieberkuhn reflectors. The central hole allows viewing via the objective lens above.
Lieberkuhn reverse. They are numbered "1", "2", or "3".
