This gear is the signature object of the Adams' Variable Microscope. The ivory handle turns a pinion gear that rotates the main gear. This, in turn, changes tilt position of the main support pillar. The handle slips onto the square shaft (arrow) so it can be placed on either side of the microscope.
The microscope body can be tilted through 90°.
