The optics of a early 18th Century compound microscope: Dellebarre Microscope Universal (#35), 1793

Modeling
The calculated magnification and 2-pt resolution were reasonable based on observations.

Calculated magnification is very sensitive to sample location.

Disadvantages of the 5 eyepiece design are:
Decreased transmittance
Impurities in the lenses are magnified.
Multiple images were observed when using 5 eyepiece lenses and viewed from an oblique angle.

I(secondary) / I(primary) = 57% (upper bound)

M(secondary) / M(primary) = 0.25 (eyepiece magnification is ~4X)

The microscope body consists of six lenses: The objective lens and five eyepiece lenses. The total magnification was calculated to be 11.9x and observed to be 11.67x.
