| This is a compound box microscope, probably made in France. The highly decorated box is made of wood veneer. The body tube, with three lenses (objective, field, eyepiece), is covered with black shagreen. The inner cardboard tube is decorated with gold-tooled parchment or fish skin. The microscope itself is supported on a circular shaft that is mounted to the base with an ornate brass foot. Focusing is accomplished by sliding the body tube up or down on the brass support shaft, using friction to hold its position. On the top of the box is mounted a rotatable slide holder and a stage forceps for holding specimens. The mirror is inside the attractive wood box and its angle is manipulated by adjustment from the outside. A drawer in the base contained accessories (there are none with this instrument). The box is 11.5(w)x11.5cm(d)x13cm(h). The total height is approximately 30cm.
This microscope in the Golub Collection was originally microscope #34 in the former Nachet Collection. |
