Edmund Culpeper is credited for inventing the concave illuminating mirror mounted along the optic axis of the microscope. Prior to Culpeper, illuminating mirrors, if present, were flat and often fixed in position.
The microscope has a bull's-eye lens to illuminate opaque samples from above.
