The microscope body is supported by a single, rectangular brass pillar. It is screwed to an oak block, presumably because the original base was missing. The base plate has a hole for the illuminating mirror, now missing. The pillar is supported by a cast brass truss. The sliding pillar for focusing fits into the larger rectangular pillar base (arrow).
Focus is typical rack & pinion. The lower jam screw (A) fixes the mechanism to the support pillar. The top portion slides along the pillar, moving the microscope body support (B).
The cross-shaped stage is engraved "Adams London". Slots on two arms are for accessories (missing).
