The microscope body is supported by two hardwood shafts. The front is stationary and fixed to the base. The back shaft slides vertically. The microscope body support piece is attached to this shaft at the top. Both shafts are supported by a hardwood casing surrounding the lower third. Connected to the back shaft is the microscope mounting bracket. The bracket is constructed of brass and wood (cracked in this microscope).

After securing the lower jam mount, fine focus is accomplished by turning the fine-pitched Hevelius screw. This action slides the microscope body closer or further from the specimen.
